The Carnegie initiates the 25-26 performing arts season with the acclaimed musical The Color Purple, a recognized winner.
The Carnegie is set to present the award-winning musical "The Color Purple" from June 27 to July 6, 2025. This production, filled with mature themes and strong performances, promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Directed by Torie Wiggins, who has previously brought "DREAMGIRLS" and "PROOF" to The Carnegie's stage, "The Color Purple" tells the story of Celie, an African American woman in the early 20th century, on a journey of self-discovery.
The ensemble for this powerful production includes a talented group of actors such as Kenneth Early (Mister), Jordyn Jones (Celie, making her professional stage debut), Kertu Bell (Squeak), Brittany "Harmony" Hayes (Sofia), Elana Danielle Elmore (Shug Avery), JavonCameron (Harpo), and many more.
The design team, consisting of Tyler Gabbard (Scenic Designer), Maria F. Ortiz Lopez (Costume Designer), Julie Cowger (Lighting Designer), Danielle Lobello (Sound Designer), and Tiara M. Jones (Wig and Hair Designer), has worked tirelessly to create a visually stunning and immersive environment for the audience.
Jason Alexander Holmes, Associate Director of Choirs at the May Festival, leads the music for this production, with choreography by UC-CCM Musical Theatre graduate Julia Schick. Holmes previously led music for "LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR & GRILL" at The Carnegie.
"The Color Purple" is based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and adapted for the stage by Marsha Norman. The musical's music and lyrics are by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray.
