The Swedish automaker, Volvo, is set to bring back the XC70 in late summer 2025, as a standalone model. The new Volvo XC70 (2025) promises to offer a blend of comfort, intelligent technology, and ample space, all wrapped up in a design that aligns with a clear, Scandinavian-influenced Volvo aesthetic.
The XC70 (2025) is a plug-in hybrid vehicle, measuring around 4.8 meters in length, placing it between the XC60 and XC90. It boasts an electric range of over 200 km, according to the optimistic Chinese CLTC cycle, and features a bidirectional charging capability, allowing it to supply power to external devices.
Under the hood, the XC70 (2025) is powered by the Lynk 08's powertrain, which combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor to produce a system output of 345 PS (257 kW). The battery in the Lynk 08 is 39.6 kWh, allowing for a purely electric range of up to 200 km. A combustion engine supplements the powertrain for long distances, enabling ranges of over 1200 km without a stop, according to the manufacturer.
The interior of the XC70 (2025) is equipped with a standalone 15.4-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch driver display, and an optional 92-inch augmented reality head-up display. The infotainment system offers AI-assisted voice control, connectivity, and over-the-air updates, with many vehicle functions able to be remotely controlled via an app.
The XC70 (2025) also comes with a range of safety features, including the Door Opening Alert, active lane keep assist, and the Park Assist Pilot, controlled via sensor fusion from cameras and radar.
The Volvo XC70 was originally an off-road variant of the Volvo V70, introduced in 1997 as the V70 Cross Country and renamed XC70 in 2002. The XC70 was produced over three generations until 2016, serving as a comfortable all-rounder with SUV styling for light off-road adventures.
The XC70 (2025) is currently available for pre-order exclusively in China, where it will also be produced. However, a market introduction for Europe is planned for a later date, pending market conditions and customer interest. As of now, the Swedish automaker has not yet communicated a price for either the eastern or local market.
The technology enabling the Volvo XC70's plug-in hybrid electric drive with an electric range of over 200 km is provided by Volvo's new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform for plug-in hybrids, developed by Volvo Cars itself, as part of their electrified product portfolio. It is likely that the XC70 (2025) will also make use of technology from sister company Lynk & Co and its 08 model.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Volvo XC70 (2025) as we approach its market launch.
