In a significant gathering, approximately 50 early childhood education specialists convened at the Naturpädagogisches Zentrum Fasanerie in Wiesbaden. The event, organised by the Hessian Ministry of Labor, Integration, Youth, and Social Affairs (HMSI), the Green Space Department, Coordination Office Climate Education Landscape Wiesbaden, and the Social Affairs Office, Department of Daycare Centers and Daycare Services, of the state capital Wiesbaden, aimed to provide insights on how climate education can be integrated in a playful way in early childhood education settings.
State Secretary for Social Affairs Manuela Strube, along with Mayor Christiane Hinninger, attended the opening of the specialist dialogue. Strube emphasized that early childhood education lays the foundation for sustainable thinking and responsible action, while Hinninger expressed delight that the specialist dialogue took place at the Fasanerie, an outstanding institution in Wiesbaden for nature pedagogical offers and climate education.
Kerstin Jacobs from the Coordination Office Climate Education Landscape Wiesbaden stated that the specialist dialogue is one of the impulses set for climate education in early childhood education. Bettina Gies, a councilor, emphasized that the climate education landscape in Wiesbaden has a long history of successful, careful, and cross-departmental preparatory work since the 1980s.
The initiative to organize the expert discussion series on climate education in early childhood in Wiesbaden was started by the Klima.Werk of the Emschergenossenschaft/Lippeverband in collaboration with the local community. Networking among specialists and local offers was identified as a positive effect that strengthens the quality of educational work.
Practical offers like the specialist dialogue are important tools for integrating climate education in kindergartens and daycare services, as mentioned by Strube. Further dialogue formats are planned as part of this statewide event series.
