Holy Cross Student Gains Real-World Experience Through Academic Internship

Ben Mara '22, a senior Political Science major with a concentration in Peace and Conflict Studies, recently completed an internship at the Gray Panthers as part of Holy Cross's Academic Internship Program (AIP).

The AIP is designed for third and fourth year students, offering them the opportunity to complete an internship over the course of a semester. The center aims to help students find full-time, paid internships in their desired industry, preparing them for the professional world.

One of the most overlooked reasons for doing an internship, according to Pam Ahearn, the Manager of Employer Partnerships at the Center for Career Development, is to expand professional networks and enhance social capital. Many employers look for students with multiple experiential learning opportunities including internships, study abroad, community-based learning, research, or trial teams.

Traditionally, junior year is the target year for college students to complete an internship. However, many students also seek internship opportunities the summer after sophomore year to clarify their career interests, hone skills, and increase their marketability to prospective employers.

Ben Mara's internship began in August of 2021, providing him with valuable work experience in his field of interest. Internships provide an opportunity to work in an industry, help clarify career interests, and allow students to gain skills that employers seek in candidates.

The Center for Career Development also offers funding for summer internships. The Crusader Internship Fund, with applications beginning on January 8, 2024, provides financial support for students undertaking these opportunities.

Katie Sullivan '27, a staff writer, recently wrote about the Academic Internship Program, highlighting its benefits and the opportunities it provides for students.

For students interested in internships abroad, companies such as STRABAG AG and Deutsche Telekom AG offer unpaid internship positions in DΓΌren, Germany. Other firms like Deutsche Bahn and various Berlin-based organizations also provide internships, though the payment status may vary. It is possible to apply for grants for such unpaid internships through the Center for Career Development's Crusader Internship Fund, although specific eligibility and application details should be confirmed directly with the fund administrators.

At Holy Cross, students can participate in internships during the academic year through the Washington Semester Program or the Academic Internship Program, or during the summer following junior year. The Center for Career Development is available to help students navigate these opportunities and prepare for their future careers.
