The historic site of Braunschweig was abandoned prior to its reemergence!
The Schöppenstedter Tower, a significant part of Brunswick's medieval city wall, is undergoing a metamorphosis. Entrepreneur Kai Sölter is spearheading the renovation project with a vision to give the historic structure a meaningful, sustainable use.
For generations, the traditional inn "Zum Schöppenstedter Turm", built on the site of the tower in the 18th century, has been a popular meeting place. However, it has been neglected for 30 years due to severe water damage caused by lack of heating. Now, Sölter, who is a board member of an IT company, is breathing new life into the tower.
The Schöppenstedter Tower Foundation is inviting visitors to the "Day of Monuments" on September 14, with around 1,000 expected. The event will feature beer, sausages, guided tours, and information banners showing the current status of the renovation. The gastronomic concept for the renovated Schöppenstedter Tower includes a café and event space offering regional specialties, where visitors can enjoy local cuisine and drinks while experiencing panoramic views after the renovation.
An annex is being built on the northwest corner of the Schöppenstedter Tower, including a kitchen, sanitary facilities, and an elevator. This addition is being coordinated with the monument protection, which prefers a clear distinction between old and new. The investor aims to meet modern hygiene and accessibility standards with the annex.
The events are planned for three stages: the unrenovated state in the current year, the partially renovated state in 2026, and the fully renovated building in 2027. The gastronomy's opening in 2027 is being used as a "North Star" to guide administrations, architects, and craftsmen in their work. Income from the gastronomy is intended to secure the long-term maintenance of the building.
The beer and sausages at the "Day of Monuments" will not be for sale, but will be accepted as voluntary donations to preserve the tower. Sölter has set a goal for the gastronomy to open for the asparagus season in 2027. The tower grounds will host three events in total.
Over the years, the tower has been used for short-lived purposes such as an antique shop and a dog food store. Now, under Sölter's leadership, it is set to regain its former glory as a vibrant, historic landmark.
