In a significant move towards sustainable urban development, Con-Energy Consult has been tasked with determining the potential of a heat plan for three cities in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The cities involved are Gelsenkirchen, Gladbeck, and, although the project leader for Bottrop is not explicitly named, it is known that the project includes urban development and climate-neutral district redevelopment in the NRW region, including Bottrop.

The project, which also encompasses Essen, Wuppertal, Oberhausen, and Gütersloh, is a crucial step towards ensuring long-term individual heat supply security for citizens. According to Kai Thiemann of Gelsenkirchen, plans are expected to be developed for all three municipalities by early 2026.

Juliane Hausknecht from Con-Energy Consult emphasises the importance of the project and the needs of the people. She assures that the project will prioritise these needs throughout the entire process. Before diving into the development of plans, Con-Energy Consult will first assess the current situation in the municipalities.

The implementation strategy and concrete measures for the heat plan will be developed by Con-Energy Consult. However, the public will be kept informed about all project milestones by both Con-Energy Consult and the responsible parties of the cities.

Dr. Rammert-Bentlage, partners in Gelsenkirchen and Gladbeck, stresses the importance of a transparent process involving citizens and relevant actors in the energy supply discussion. This approach ensures that the project remains accountable and responsive to the needs of the community.

In Gladbeck, Jürgen Harks, the project leader, shares the same goal of long-term individual heat supply security for citizens. The success of this project will not only contribute to the sustainability of these cities but also set a precedent for future urban development projects in the NRW region.
