Germany Prepares for World Cup Qualifier Against Northern Ireland
Julian Nagelsmann, the German national team coach, is set to face Northern Ireland in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Sunday. The match, which will air on RTL at 8:45 PM, comes after a disappointing opening defeat in Bratislava, a continuation of a downward trend at the Nations League final tournament.
Nagelsmann and his team suffered losses against Portugal (1:2) and France (0:2) at the tournament. However, the coach remains confident and emphasizes that the team is the priority, not him.
Rudi Völler, the sports director, showed solidarity with Nagelsmann at the start of the final training session before the match. Völler's support comes as Nagelsmann prepares to make changes to the team, with Pascal Groß expected to start on the right, and Joshua Kimmich staying in midfield.
An emotional player like Robert Andrich could now be called upon to play alongside Kimmich. Nagelsmann also considers Flo Wirtz an essential and untouchable difference-maker for the team. Wirtz, who was trained as a youth player at FC Cologne, is particularly in the spotlight.
Changes are needed in the attack, despite the limited options in the squad without quality players like Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz, and the injured center forward Tim Kleindienst. Nagelsmann calls for "emotional football" and "energetic teamwork" in the match against Northern Ireland.
Oliver Baumann, the goalkeeper, spoke about the importance of "energy, tackling, and winning second balls" in the match. Meanwhile, Joshua Kimmich complained about a lack of aggression in possession in the previous game.
Nnamdi Collins is likely to lose his place in the starting lineup, with Mats Hummels, a key figure in the 2014 German World Cup-winning team, expected to take his place. Hummels will be honoured by the DFB for his services, with the player set to be honoured before kickoff on Sunday in Cologne.
As Nagelsmann focuses on the upcoming game instead of long-term goals like becoming world champions, the coach is determined to "do a better job" than they did on Thursday. With the support of his team and the German football association, Nagelsmann is ready to lead Germany to victory against Northern Ireland.
