The Lancaster Green Hydrogen Plant will be among California's largest, marking a significant stride in renewable energy production.

Lancaster, California is set to host one of the largest green hydrogen production facilities in the state, with Texas-based company Element Resources leading the operations. The facility, scheduled to open in 2025, will be located in LANCASTER, Calif., and will supply users throughout the Los Angeles area.

The green hydrogen produced at the Lancaster facility will be renewable in nature, using solar power and electrolysis to convert water, renewable biomethane gas, and plastic waste into hydrogen with zero emissions. This aligns with the city's efforts towards regional decarbonization and contributes to California's growing hydrogen production capacity.

Element Resources' plant will complement two other facilities in development in Lancaster: an anaerobic digester from Hitachi Zosen Inova and SGH2 Energy's facility for gasifying recycled mixed paper. These developments mark a significant step towards Lancaster's goal of building a robust hydrogen production infrastructure.

The green hydrogen production facility in Lancaster will be part of a global collaboration promoting hydrogen as a critical component for addressing climate change. This initiative is in line with the city's partnership with Fukushima, Japan, announced in July 2021, aiming to become sister cities promoting hydrogen.

The new facility, capable of producing 20,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, will be strategically located in East Lancaster, providing easy access to highway and rail transportation to key Southern California markets. This location also places the plant less than 100 miles from the ports of LA and Long Beach, where a handful of companies are beginning to use hydrogen-powered trucks and equipment.

FirstElement Fuel operates the large green hydrogen plant in Lancaster. The announcement of the Green Hydrogen plant in Lancaster was made on January 24, 2023. The city of Lancaster, located in Antelope Valley, California, is excited about this development and looks forward to the benefits it will bring to the region.
