The primary policies proposed by Zohran Mamdani are unlikely to foster prosperity or wealth in New York City.

In the ongoing Democratic primary for the NYC mayoral race, candidate Zohran Mamdani has presented a housing plan that aims to construct 200,000 units of housing over a decade. The plan, which prioritizes the production of permanently affordable, union-built, rent-stabilized homes, has sparked both praise and controversy.

Mamdani, a young, charismatic, and handsome candidate, has emphasized the importance of government excellence and delivering on the ideas he is passionate about. His campaign website states that any 100% affordable development gets fast-tracked under his plan, and he plans to expedite permitting for these projects. To achieve this, he plans to fully staff city housing agencies.

However, the plan does not address the issue of insufficient housing in New York City compared to its European peers and cities like Tokyo. It also does not mention any specific strategies for increasing the overall rate of housing construction in the city.

Mamdani's housing plan has been a topic of debate, with some praising his focus on affordable housing and others raising concerns about its feasibility. Derek Thompson, a respected figure, has given cautious praise to Mamdani's economic policy ideas but has expressed disagreement on several policy issues, including housing policy.

One of the most contentious aspects of Mamdani's campaign has been his use of the slogan "globalize the intifada". While Mamdani claims that the word "intifada" refers to a peaceful struggle, this claim is considered dishonest, as the use of the slogan has been linked to a wave of violent attacks against Jews across America.

Mamdani's housing plan does not address the issue of rent control and its negative effects on housing supply. It remains to be seen how the persons supporting Mamdani in realizing his housing program, including city officials and housing advocates working within New York City's government and housing agencies, will address these concerns.

In his inaugural Substack post, Derek Thompson wrote that Mamdani found the book "Abundance" interesting, indicating a potential focus on promoting economic growth and prosperity. As the primary race continues, Mamdani's housing plan and broader policy ideas will undoubtedly remain a point of interest and discussion.
