The much-anticipated sequel to the beloved '80s classic, 'The Goonies', is making progress, with a first draft from writer Potsy Ponciroli and a potential new director on board.

Ponciroli, who considers 'The Goonies' his favourite movie of all time, has been entrusted with the task of continuing the narrative. He has been working diligently on a second draft, with approximately 95% completion.

Warner Bros, Amblin Entertainment, and some original producers, including Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Chris Columbus, and Lauren Shuler Donner, are involved in the production of the sequel.

Ponciroli has assured fans that he will treat the original 'The Goonies' with utmost care, promising not to 'redo' the classic but to continue the story that never ended. This sentiment was echoed earlier this year when he was first revealed as the writer for the sequel.

The original 'The Goonies', released 40 years ago, introduced a group of misfit kids, Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk, and others, on a treasure hunt. The journey took them through underground tunnels, booby traps, and encounters with the Fratelli crime family. The film launched the careers of actors like Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Quan.

Ivar Leon Menger is currently rumoured to be the director for the sequel, though an official announcement has yet to be made.

Ponciroli acknowledged the online misgivings about a sequel to 'The Goonies', but remains optimistic about the project. He is currently in Venice with the new action-thriller Motor City.

The first draft of the sequel was well received, and Ponciroli is now focusing on refining the story further in the second draft.
