In the summer movie season of 2025, "Weapons" emerged as the clear winner, earning an impressive $134.79 million since its wide release on August 8. The action-packed blockbuster topped the box office not just once, but 22 out of its 25 days in theaters, a testament to its enduring appeal.

Over the Labor Day weekend, "Weapons" continued its reign, earning $12.78 million, enough to secure the top spot. The re-release of the classic "Jaws" (1975) finished a distant second, earning $9.9 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore, commented that "Weapons" found itself in a position to take most of the box office earnings and run with it. Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, added that Labor Day weekend is typically a time to catch up on movies that came out later in the summer.

The summer movie season, on average, accounts for as much as 40% of annual box office earnings. This year was no exception, with a broad slate of genres, including horror, comedy, family animations, and action, continuing to drive moviegoers to theaters. Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" was the highest earner of the summer, grossing approximately $422 million. Other top performers included Warner Bros. Pictures' "Superman" and Universal Pictures' "Jurassic World Rebirth," earning approximately $351.7 million and $336 million respectively.

However, the summer box office earnings fell short of reaching a post-pandemic milestone of $4 billion, a feat that was only achieved in 2023 due in large part to the "Barbenheimer" craze. Paul Dergarabedian noted that the summer of 2025 ended with a bit of a whimper rather than a bang.

Disney's Searchlight Pictures' "The Roses," a retelling of the 1989 comedy "The War of the Roses," opened this weekend, earning approximately $8 million over the four-day period. Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Conjuring: Last Rites," a new addition to the strong horror franchise, is expected to boost moviegoer numbers in September due to its anticipated appeal to fans.

"Freakier Friday" (2025) finished fourth, earning $8.3 million over the four-day weekend. The 2025 Labor Day weekend box office earnings totaled approximately $82.9 million. With the release of "The Conjuring: Last Rites" and other anticipated films, the September box office is poised for a strong finish.
