In the past two years, a tragic number of journalists have lost their lives in Gaza. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has been meticulously documenting these killings since October 2023.

According to the CPJ's records, of the 198 journalists killed, 65 were freelancers, and 124 were staffers working for various media outlets. The first death recorded was that of Ibrahim Marzouq, a Palestinian media worker, on Oct. 24, 2023. The most recent victims were five journalists killed on Aug. 25, 2025, including Hussam Al-Masri, who worked for Reuters.

The CPJ has confirmed that all journalists killed in Gaza over this period were indeed journalists. However, Israel has been attempting to smear the journalists it has killed, suggesting some of them were Hamas operatives. The CPJ, however, has verified the credentials of these journalists.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the Aug. 25 attack as "a mishap." But Sara Qudah, the CPJ's Middle East and North Africa regional director, believes otherwise. She stated that the international media and community have been turning a blind eye to what local media and journalists are reporting in Gaza. After the events in August, she asserted that the international community and media cannot deny what is happening on the ground in Gaza.

Qudah paid tribute to the courage and sense of responsibility of Gaza's journalists, who are documenting a war they are living. She also stated that justice will happen thanks to the journalists who are documenting Israel's war crimes in Gaza.

Qudah further asserted that journalists in Gaza are being deliberately targeted by Israel, which refuses to allow foreign journalists into Gaza. She believes that the international media and community have been complicit in this by turning a blind eye to the situation in Gaza.

The CPJ is an independent, non-profit organization that was founded in 1981 to promote press freedom worldwide. In addition to its work in Gaza, the CPJ continues to advocate for individual journalists facing issues in various countries, including dozens of cases in August alone.

Hussam Al-Masri's family, who are living in a tent and struggling to find food, are a poignant reminder of the human cost of this conflict. Al-Masri was survived by his wife and four children.

The organization that compiled and documented the list of all journalists killed in Gaza between October 2023 and August 2025 is not mentioned in the provided search results. However, the CPJ's work to "defend the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal" is a testament to its commitment to protecting press freedom in Gaza and beyond. The CPJ has submitted a series of questions about the Aug. 25 attack to the Israeli Defense Forces and is calling for an independent investigation.
