The Universe: Where do we stand amidst the cosmic expanse?

On the evening of September 9, 2025, The Guest Room at the Southern Cross Garden Bar Restaurant in Wellington, New Zealand, will play host to an enlightening discussion about the nature of the universe. This event, part of the Café Scientifique series hosted by Pūtaiao ki te Pāpori-School of Science in Society, will feature Dr Tim Corballis, a Senior Lecturer in Science in Society at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington and a novelist, and Dr Yvette Perrott, a Senior Lecturer in Astrophysics at Te Herenga Waka.

The topic of the discussion is "Space: What is our place in the cosmos?" The astrophysicist and the novelist will delve into the evolving picture that physics presents about the universe, exploring its vastness and our place within it. The discussion will also cover the ways people find their place in the universe, providing a thought-provoking perspective that blends scientific knowledge with cultural and aesthetic insights.

The event will begin at 6 pm, with doors opening at 5.30 pm. Talks are scheduled to commence promptly, followed by a question-and-answer session to engage the audience in the conversation. The evening will start with a short introduction from the speakers, setting the stage for an enriching and stimulating discussion.
