Stuttgart, the capital city of Baden-Württemberg, may not be home to any of the universities mentioned in a recent analysis, but the state itself is a hub for higher education. The study, conducted by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) in Gütersloh, focused on universities within Baden-Württemberg.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the average Abitur grade for students from general education gymnasiums in the southwest was 2.2 in 2025, remaining stable compared to the previous year's 2.23. For students from vocational gymnasiums, the average Abitur grade was also 2.4, consistent with last year's 2.40.

The analysis revealed that approximately 50.2% of the study offers at Baden-Württemberg universities come with access restrictions, such as a numerus clausus or an application procedure. Interestingly, the proportion of study offers with access restrictions varies across different fields of study. It is particularly high in law, economics, social and political sciences (51.6%), but relatively low in language and cultural studies (23.1%).

In a positive move, Baden-Württemberg universities have announced that half of their study programs will be open to first-year students regardless of their Abitur grade in the upcoming winter semester. This decision could provide more opportunities for students with a wide range of Abitur grades.

The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in Berlin has informed that comparative figures with other federal states will be available at a later date. The Ministry of Culture has also stated that further figures for the Abitur 2025, including the number of students with perfect grades, will be published at a later date.

As the educational landscape in Baden-Württemberg continues to evolve, students and prospective students can look forward to more opportunities and a diverse range of study options. Stay tuned for further updates on the Abitur 2025 and the comparative figures across different federal states.
