Three decades of German unification explored within educational settings.
On October 3rd each year, we commemorate the process of reuniting Germany in a liberal-democratic manner, a momentous event that took place thirty years ago. To help explore the current state of German unity, this publication offers four work sheets designed for educators.
The reunification and system change in East Germany marked the beginning of a long process of social integration in Germany. Thirty years later, the state of "unity" in Germany is being assessed, with the country continuing to grapple with diverse interpretations of unity. Some view reunification as the end of the GDR and socialism, while others see it as the start of a new integration, with lingering debates about political, social, and economic disparities between East and West.
Ongoing challenges include dealing with the legacy of former regime actors and uneven opportunities faced by victims of the former East German system. The social integration process in Germany has been marked by challenges and points of contention, with debates about a persistent "wall in the minds" and an alleged growing division of Germany continuing to this day.
The work sheets provided in this booklet contain current statistics, survey results, and various visual and textual sources, offering a comprehensive view of the current state of German unity. The booklet also includes an in-depth introduction to the topic, as well as methodological guidelines for using the work sheets in the classroom.
For added value, the printed version of the booklet includes the Internal Link: EU Institutions Quick Guide to tear out, providing an additional resource for educators and students alike. As we continue to reflect on the past thirty years and look towards the future, these resources serve as a valuable tool for understanding and discussing the complexities of German unity.
