Thriller film 'It Would Be Night in Caracas', produced by Edgar Ramirez, sheds light on the riots in Venezuela during 2017 and the subsequent diaspora.

In the upcoming film "It Would Be Night in Caracas", Colombian actress Natalia Reyes delivers a captivating performance as Adelaida, a character grappling with a sense of loss and identity crisis, as she leaves her homeland. The film, produced by Édgar Ramírez, is a Mexican production that was partly filmed in a guerrilla style due to the secrecy requirements in Venezuela.

The story follows Adelaida as she buries her mother and finds herself embroiled in conflicts with a woman aligned with the regime. After taking refuge in her neighbour's flat, she discovers the neighbour's corpse. This thrilling narrative maintains the spirit of longing for a place slipping away, a theme that resonates deeply with many Venezuelans who have had to flee the country without proper documentation.

The film is based on a novel by Karina Sainz Borgo and is directed by Mariana Rondón and Marité Ugás, who have delved into the thriller genre for the first time. Their direction is praised for its ability to strike a balance between the intense political unpredictability in Venezuela and the emotional turmoil faced by Adelaida.

Édgar Ramírez, in addition to producing the film, plays a supporting but crucial role. His presence adds depth to the film, as he brings his experience as a renowned actor to the table. The film's impressive cast also includes Maria Valverde, who was initially cast as Adelaida but was later replaced by Natalia Reyes.

"It Would Be Night in Caracas" is set to premiere at Venice's Spotlight on Sept. 4, followed by its North American debut at TIFF on Sept. 9. The film's production gathered an impressive cast of Venezuelan actors living in Mexico, showcasing the rich talent pool that exists despite the challenging political situation in Venezuela.

The political situation in Venezuela is indeed described as a permanent thriller due to its unpredictability. The most intense protests in Venezuela occurred in 2017, with many deaths and arrests. The film serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by those who leave their homeland, and the enduring spirit of its people.
