German State Premiers to Make "Hard Decisions" Amidst Corona Pandemic

In a sobering address, Volker Bouffier, Hessian Minister President and CDU Deputy Chairman, has warned Germans to prepare for significant measures against the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Bouffier, who also serves as the CDU's deputy chairman, dismissed criticism from Friedrich Merz about the postponement of the CDU party congress in December. He described Merz's comments as "silly, wrong, and nonsensical."

The decision to postpone the party congress had nothing to do with who should become party chairman, Bouffier clarified. Instead, he emphasised the need for the party to focus on the pressing matters at hand.

The situation regarding the corona pandemic is more dramatic than many believe, according to Bouffier. He stated that hospitals in Germany are filling up due to the pandemic, and they are already at their hospital capacity limits in Hesse.

In a joint meeting with the Chancellor on Wednesday, state premiers will make "hard decisions" to combat the spread of the virus. A digital party congress at multiple locations was quickly dismissed, and a postal vote in December was unanimously rejected by both the Presidium and the Board.

Bouffier warned that these decisions may not be pleasant for Germans, but he urged the public to understand the necessity of such measures. He emphasised that the health and safety of the nation must be prioritised.

As of the latest data from 2025, there is no information about any specific decisions taken by the heads of the state governments and the federal chancellor on Wednesday, December 2, regarding significant and unpleasant measures against the Corona pandemic in Germany. The last legal framework for Corona protection measures expired on April 7, 2023, and while the XFG "Stratus" variant is currently spreading, experts have not announced new restrictive decisions.

Despite this, Bouffier remains steadfast in his call for action. He urged Germans to take the pandemic seriously and to prepare for the measures that may be implemented to control the spread of the virus.
