Wentworth Golf Club: A Haven of Exclusivity and World-Class Golf

Wentworth Golf Club, nestled in the heart of Surrey, is one of the most prestigious golfing destinations in the UK. Once open to the public, it has since transformed into an exclusive club, with membership limited to those who can afford the estimated £175,000 debenture.

The club's two renowned courses, the West Course (also known as Burma Road) and the East Course, were designed by the legendary Harry Colt. The West Course, opened in 1926, has garnered worldwide acclaim and has hosted several significant events, including the 1953 Ryder Cup and the HSBC World Match Play Championship from 1964 to 2007. In 2010 and 2016, the course underwent extensive renovations at the hands of Ernie Els, with the South African golfing great focusing on five greens and the removal or modification of some bunkers.

The Edinburgh Course, an addition to the club since 1990, was designed by John Jacobs with assistance from Bernard Gallagher and Gary Player. The nine-hole par-3 Executive Course offers a more casual golfing experience.

Beyond golf, Wentworth offers a plethora of additional amenities. Members can enjoy a tennis club, spa, swimming pool, and a castle-like clubhouse.

The Wentworth estate, while associated with Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire, is not known for its specific residents. Instead, it is more recognised for hosting events such as the RHS Flower Show.

Becoming a member of Wentworth is not an easy feat. Options include being invited by an existing member, being an employee of the DP World Tour or the Official World Golf Ranking, or participating in corporate days at Wentworth. As of 2015, annual fees were reportedly £16,000.

Ernie Els, a seven-time HSBC World Match Play Championship winner at Wentworth, has left an indelible mark on the club. His work has not only revitalised the courses but also solidified Wentworth's status as the headquarters of the DP World Tour and the Official World Golf Ranking.
