"Together for Economic Security and Safety"
In a significant move, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron have declared that Germany and France are "back on track" following a recent meeting. This renewed cooperation comes as both nations pledge further aid to Ukraine in response to continued Russian attacks.
The meeting in Toulon marked a pivotal moment as Germany and France moved closer together in economic and security policy. Chancellor Scholz described the spirit of the meeting as a "clear view of reality and the best will to shape it."
One of the key decisions made at the conference was the enhancement of military assistance and the tightening of sanctions against Russia. Both leaders expressed their aim to exert "maximum pressure" on Russia to end the war against Ukraine. They plan to push for this in the G7 and the EU.
Another significant development was the setting aside of the long-standing dispute over the use of nuclear power between the two countries. Germany is now no longer opposed to the use of nuclear power by France, even at the European regulatory level. Both governments aim to achieve equal treatment for low-emission energy sources, including nuclear power, at the European level.
The strengthening of ties between Germany and France also extends to the energy sector. They are working towards a stronger integration of the power grids between Germany and France. In return, France is providing support for the development of hydrogen connections to southwestern Europe.
French President Macron shared a similar sentiment, commenting that when France and Germany move forward together, the rhythm of all of Europe changes. This renewed cooperation is a promising step towards a more united Europe in the face of global challenges.
