Toronto Revokes Taxi Grant for Tesla, Deputy Mayor Advocates for Tesla Yorkdale Shutdown

In a divisive move, the Toronto city council has approved a motion to exclude Tesla vehicles from the Zero Emission Grant Program for taxi and limousine owners. The decision, which passed with a vote of 20 to 4, aims to discourage the use of Tesla vehicles in the taxi and limousine industry.

The program, designed to encourage zero-emission transportation, currently provides fee reductions to 21 zero-emission taxi and limousine owners. Of these, nine are Tesla owners. Since the program's inception, these Tesla owners have collectively saved a total of $4,677 in licensing fees.

However, the decision to exclude Tesla from the grant program has been met with significant debate within the city council. Some council members questioned why Tesla was being singled out while other American manufacturers were still included in the program.

Mayor Olivia Chow stated that there is no reason for the city to subsidize Tesla's purchase, while Deputy Mayor Mike Colle went a step further. Colle referred to Elon Musk as "the second most powerful man in the Trump administration who is hell-bent on destroying the Canadian economy." Colle also expressed a desire to shut down Tesla's store at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre, in addition to the motion to exclude Tesla vehicles from the Zero Emission Grant Program.

It's important to note that the motion will not affect the existing Tesla owners already registered in the program. They will continue to receive the fee reductions. Furthermore, Tesla remains eligible for subsidies in the grant program for all other electric vehicles, including Cadillacs made in the U.S.

The exclusion becomes effective on March 1, 2023, and the Tesla store at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre is not affected by the motion. The identity of the person referred to by Colle as "the second most powerful man in the Trump administration" could not be determined from the current public information.

This decision has sparked a heated discussion, with many questioning the fairness and reasoning behind the exclusion of Tesla from the Zero Emission Grant Program. As the situation develops, it will be interesting to see how this decision affects the future of zero-emission transportation in Toronto's taxi and limousine industry.
