Torrential rain and cloudburst cause tragedy in a mountain village in Pakistan, resulting in the grim discovery of twenty lifeless bodies.
Flood Death Toll Rises in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province
Heavy monsoon rains and floods continue to wreak havoc in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, with the death toll climbing steadily.
According to the latest reports from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), a total of 695 people have lost their lives due to floods across Pakistan since late June. The province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been the hardest hit, with 358 deaths reported since last Friday.
The district with the highest number of casualties is Swabi, where more than 150 mm of rain fell within an hour on Friday morning, causing flash floods that claimed the lives of many. The district commissioner in Peshawar reported at least 20 deaths in a mountain village due to flash floods caused by a cloudburst. Another cloudburst on Monday near Gadoon in the Swabi district led to an increase in the death toll in the village near Gadoon, from 11 to an unknown number.
The floods in Buner have also resulted in more than 200 deaths, according to earlier reports. In addition, more than 30 children have died in the floods since Friday, as reported by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.
The NDMA has sent additional relief equipment, such as tents, blankets, electric generators, pumps, medicine, and rations, to the flood-affected areas. Heavy machinery, including excavators, are being used to recover missing bodies.
The torrential rains and flooding this monsoon season have caused destruction in several northwestern districts of Pakistan. The flood water, caused by intense rain, has swept away houses in the affected areas, leaving many residents homeless and in need of aid.
Authorities have warned of more rains to come in two spells of monsoon until September 10, and residents are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. The NDMA has called for continued support and cooperation from the international community to help Pakistan in its time of need.
