Touring Dormagen's landmarks, from the Rhine Tower to its air-raid shelter
On September 14, 2020, Dormagen invites residents and visitors alike to participate in the "Day of Open Monuments". This nationwide event, organised by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, will offer a unique opportunity to delve into the city's rich history.
The day will feature 16 historical sites and over 25 individual actions, providing a varied local offering. The Rheinturm, a landmark of Dormagen, will reopen on this special day, offering a chance to explore its vacant interior which has been closed for over 20 years.
The Rheinturm will open its doors at 10 am, with the opening event taking place at Rheinstraße 1 in Zons. Participation in all events is free, making this a perfect day for history enthusiasts on a budget.
Jost Auler, Peter Bruns, and Volker Kuhlmann will guide a tour about the rediscovery of the imperial-bavarian military camp of 1642 in the Zons Heath. Other sites that will be open to the public include the Roman UNESCO World Heritage site, Knechtsteden Monastery, the memorial cemetery in Dormagen-Mitte, the Jewish cemetery in the Zons Heath, the Bunker Memorial Site in the Raphaelshaus, historic Friedestrom castle, district museum, Rheintorkapelle, windmill, air raid shelter at the Feldtor, and more.
In addition, Gerd Bock, the new honorary monument conservator, will offer an advisory service from 12 to 2 pm under the chestnut tree on Mühlenstraße in the Zons old town. More information about the "Day of Open Monuments" can be found online at www.our-website/monuments-day.
