Toxic blue algae causing foul odor in oak trees
In the picturesque town of Fulda, a bloom of blue-green algae has taken over the Aue pond. Despite this, authorities and local organisations have reassured residents that the water remains safe for use.
The authorities have identified the area near the waterworks as the location where the phosphate concentration in the river water is higher than in the Aue pond, which has been the centre of the algae bloom. However, measurements have shown that the phosphate content in the pond itself is not excessive, and would not provide a lasting solution to the problem of over-fertilization.
The city spokesman, Johannes Heller, has stated that the bloom of blue-green algae is to blame for the current state of the pond. Despite this, he has emphasised that the water has not been polluted. This sentiment is echoed by the angling club, which leases the pond, and has confirmed that the water remains safe.
The Aue pond, which was combined as part of the state garden show 2023, has been the subject of recent investments in its filter plant. These investments have significantly improved the water quality in the pond. However, a temporary power outage in Fulda caused the filter plant to be out of operation for a short period.
The bloom has resulted in a green film floating on the water's surface, and a strong smell of rotten eggs permeating the air, particularly in the area along the shore balcony and the wooden bridge. Despite this, the oxygen content in the water remains normal, and no fish die-off due to the blue-green algae bloom has been reported.
In an attempt to improve the condition of the pond, it is necessary to blow oxygen into the water using devices. The city spokesman expects the bloom of blue-green algae to decrease in the next few days, bringing some relief to the affected areas.
On a positive note, the filter plant is now operational again, and the water quality in the Aue pond is expected to improve further. The public is advised to avoid contact with the water during the bloom, but can rest assured that the water remains safe for use.
