Traffic Chaos: Emergency Proclaimed in Olekmin District
In the Olekminsky District of the Republic of Yakutia, an emergency situation has been declared in four settlements due to an ice jam on the Lena River. The government unit cooperating with the Russian EMERgency COMmittee (EMERCOM) to address this disaster is the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) of Russia.
The affected settlements include Neryungri-1, Neryungri-2, Kylakh, and Horintsy. In Kylakh, 62 residential houses have been flooded, affecting 134 people including 5 children. Evacuation of the population is underway across the river to Dapparai. In Horintsy, 38 courtyard areas have been flooded, including 19 residential houses, affecting 100 people including 37 children.
In Neryungri-2, 20 courtyard areas have been flooded, affecting 116 people including 22 children. In Neryungri-1, 27 residential houses have been flooded, affecting 66 people including 3 children. Some residents in both Neryungri-1 and Neryungri-2 have been placed with relatives instead of evacuated to temporary accommodation centers.
A 24/7 operational headquarters has been organized to manage the emergency situation. The Russian EMERCOM in Yakutia reports that they have a Mi-8 aircraft in operation. Two aircraft from Polar Airlines have arrived in Olekminsk, one for evacuating flooded settlements and the other for explosive works. A Mi-8 helicopter of the Russian Emergencies Ministry's Helicopter Service is also arriving with two tons of explosives.
Temporary accommodation centers have been equipped with food, medication, and essential supplies. The population is being informed through the media about the possible threat of flooding in these settlements. As of now, 27 people, including 5 children from Kylakh, have been placed in temporary accommodation centers, while the rest have been placed with relatives. Similarly, 22 people, including 17 children from Horintsy, have been evacuated to temporary accommodation centers, while the rest have been placed with relatives.
In addition, 24 people, including 3 children, have been evacuated from Neryungri-1 to temporary accommodation centers, and 6 people, including 4 children, have been evacuated from Neryungri-2 to temporary accommodation centers. A 30-person inter-agency operational group is working, including 4 units of equipment, in the Olekminsky district to manage the emergency situation.
Sections of the "Umanas" automobile road, 1.5 km in length, have been flooded in Neryungri-1. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
