In a heartbreaking turn of events, Lisbon, the vibrant capital city of Portugal, was shaken by a tragic accident on September 3. The Elevador da Glória, a popular tourist attraction and one of four funicular streetcars operating in the city, derailed, resulting in the death of over a dozen individuals and injuring 21.

The accident has cast a dark shadow over the city, with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa lamenting the loss of life in a statement published on September 3. He declared a national day of mourning on September 4, and three days of mourning have been declared in Lisbon for the victims.

Among the injured were tourists from various countries, including Germany, Spain, South Korea, Cape Verde, Canada, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Morocco. The Patriarchate of Lisbon, led by Catholic Patriarch Rui Valério, expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, offering prayers for the victims and their families, as well as for the recovery of the injured.

The patriarch described the incident as a dark and painful event in the country's history. He also thanked those who assisted the victims and offered his blessing to all involved, including the families of the deceased. Pope Leo XIV, in his condolences, conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the victims and their families, as well as gratitude to those involved in rescue operations. He assured his blessing to all involved.

The pope's condolences were echoed by world leaders and government representatives, including the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon. The Lisbon City Council, in response to the tragedy, suspended the operation of all funicular streetcars in the city.

The Patriarchate of Lisbon will preside over an evening Mass on September 4 for the victims. The Elevador da Glória derailment is currently being investigated for potential maintenance issues. As the city mourns, the community stands united in support and remembrance of those affected by this tragic event.
