"Tragedy Strikes Lisbon: 16 Fatalities in Train Accident, Victims from Ten Different Nations Identified"
In the heart of Portugal's capital, Lisbon, a tragic incident has occurred. The Gloria Funicular, a beloved tourist attraction and iconic symbol of the city, was involved in a devastating crash.
The accident claimed the lives of at least 16 individuals, with casualties from at least 10 different countries. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro described the incident as a "tragedy without nationality."
Lisbon's Mayor, Carlos Moedas, announced a three-day period of mourning following the "tragic accident." He expressed his deepest condolences to all the families and friends of the victims, stating that Lisbon is in mourning. The Portuguese Prime Minister, too, extended his heartfelt condolences, promising to ensure the bodies of the dead are returned to their families as soon as possible.
The Gloria Funicular, classified as a national monument, carries more than 40 people, seated and standing, as it shuttles up and down the hill for a few hundred metres. Two carriages run parallel to each other during operation.
The judicial police in Portugal have been involved in the investigation since the beginning, and a probe has been opened by the public prosecutor. Portugal's defence minister Nuno Melo expressed all his solidarity and offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
Portugal has announced three days of national mourning. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has cancelled his agenda for Thursday as the country holds a national day of mourning.
The British Foreign Office is in touch with the local authorities and stands by to provide consular assistance if there are any affected British nationals. The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to repatriate injured foreign nationals to their home countries.
A three-year-old German boy survived the crash with light injuries and is currently in a children's hospital in Lisbon.
This tragic incident has left the city in shock, with Mayor Moedas describing it as another day of grief for his city. The Portuguese Prime Minister, too, expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims.
