Tragic Era of Global History Acknowledged by President Michael D Higgins in Gaza

President Michael D. Higgins of Ireland recently embarked on a visit to the Palestinian territories, where he encountered a sombre reality. A medical report indicated that Palestinian children are more traumatized by their parents' humiliation than by death.

During his visit, President Higgins also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, describing it as a "tragic period" in the world's history. He expressed concern about the use of the conflict as a distraction from neglected political issues.

The President also highlighted the unaccountable role of technology in the ongoing conflict. He emphasized the importance of global reassertion of the importance of the General Assembly when it comes to humanitarian access with United Nations support.

The United Nations, as a key player, provides support for humanitarian access. This support is crucial, as Gaza City and its surrounding areas are officially suffering from famine, according to the United Nations' Integrated Food Security Phase Classification. The classification officially announced this in late August 2025, marking the first time famine has been declared in Gaza and the Middle East.

President Higgins also spoke about his recent health, revealing that he had a stroke on February 29, 2020, and spent eight days in the hospital. He shared his personal experience of visiting tented communities in Gaza and the West Bank, and acknowledged that his balance remains risky but he has mostly recovered from the stroke.

In addition to discussing the crisis in Gaza, President Higgins also spoke about his plans for the future. He mentioned upcoming plans to leave Áras an Uachtaráin later this year, following the forthcoming election. He hinted at potential upcoming changes, mentioning discussions about moving boxes and skips.

President Higgins also expressed a desire to continue working with Travellers and on projects related to the elimination of violence against women. He diplomatically declined to comment on his preferences for his successor.

The General Assembly, as a forum for multilateral discussion on a full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations, provides a platform for such discussions. The Assembly's main policymaking organ, it offers a space for all member states to address and find solutions to pressing global issues.
