Tragic Incident: Authorities Probe After Historic Funicular Collision in Lisbon Leaves At Least 15 Dead
In a shocking turn of events, the Glória funicular, a historic cable railway in Lisbon and a national monument, derailed at around 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday, causing a significant impact on the affected communities in the city.
The incident occurred at Restauradores Square during the evening rush hour, resulting in a collision with a building. At least 15 deaths and 18 injuries were reported, with several victims in critical condition.
The derailment may have been caused by a loose cable and potential brake failure, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident and to learn lessons for future safety measures.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Mayor Carlos Moedas expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims' families, while Lisbon city officials have observed a three-day period of mourning. The Portuguese government has also declared a national day of mourning.
Carris, the transport operator, maintains that all maintenance protocols were duly followed, and the maintenance of the Glória train is carried out regularly and meets all safety standards. However, further scrutiny of maintenance records and oversight practices is expected as part of the investigations.
Several victims are believed to include foreign nationals, and diplomatic contacts are underway. Among the first identified casualties is brakeman André Marques.
Eyewitnesses described the carriage losing control and crashing like a cardboard box, deeply shocking both residents and tourists in Lisbon. The crash has had a profound impact on the city, with many expressing their condolences and support for those affected.
Emergency crews, consisting of 62 personnel and 22 vehicles, responded swiftly and extracted all victims from the site within two hours. Police, prosecutors, and the national accident investigation bureau (GPIAAF) have launched formal investigations into the accident.
The Glória funicular, operational since 1885, is a significant part of Lisbon's urban transit landscape, carrying around 3 million passengers annually. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures and maintenance protocols in public transportation. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating accident.
