Police Officer Simon Bohr Laid to Rest in Saarlouis

On a somber day in Saarlouis, the community gathered to pay their respects to Police Officer Simon Bohr, who was fatally shot during an operation in Volklingen a week earlier. Approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people attended the funeral service, held in front of an evangelical church in Saarlouis.

Thorsten Weiler, the police president, spoke about the grief and despair that has dominated the Saarland police since August 21. He described Simon Bohr as "a police officer through and through," noting that he gave everything for the protection and security of his fellow human beings. Pastor Beckers and police chaplain Hubertus Kesselheim both spoke about Simon Bohr's positive qualities, describing him as an incredibly positive person, professional, reliable, and approachable.

Simon Bohr was trying to arrest a suspected perpetrator of a gas station robbery when he was shot. The perpetrator who murdered police officer Simon Bohr was an 18-year-old man who shot Bohr six times after seizing a service weapon during an attempted arrest following a robbery at an Aral gas station in Völklingen, Saarland, on August 21, 2025. The public prosecutor's office is currently investigating the case, including for murder.

The funeral procession included hundreds of uniformed police officers and many people holding white roses. As the procession marched for about 1.6 kilometers through the city, it made its way to the cemetery. Among the pieces played was a trumpet solo of the Beatles' song "Yesterday." A painted heart image was placed in front of a podium with a photo of the police officer.

Simon Bohr leaves behind a wife and two children. The widow of Simon Bohr addressed the mourners in the memorial service, but her words were not made public. The widespread sympathy for Simon Bohr's family could be a small comfort during these difficult times. The police spokesman concluded that it's time to let go.

A central memorial service for the fallen police officer is planned for Friday in Saarbrücken. Simon Bohr will be missed.
