Train collision in Egypt leaves numerous casualties, including fatalities and injuries.
The Egyptian National Railways (ENR) reported a tragic train accident on the route between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh along the Mediterranean coast, leaving at least three people dead and around 100 others injured. Two of the seven carriages derailed, as per photos from Egyptian news sites.
This incident is a stark reminder of the long-standing concerns about the condition of Egypt's railway network, one of the oldest in Africa and the Middle East, spanning over 10,000 kilometers. Maintenance work and training for train personnel are often delayed or inadequate, contributing to the high number of accidents that occur.
The poor condition of trains and tracks has been a concern for many years. Neglect in maintenance work has led to a recurring issue, with the state railway authority often playing catch-up. Poor training of train personnel is sometimes cited as a cause of accidents.
One of the worst train accidents in Egypt's history occurred in 2002, resulting in over 360 deaths. The 2002 accident is a grim reminder of the potential consequences of inadequate maintenance and safety measures.
The Ministry of Health described the incident as a "tragic accident," and thirty ambulances were deployed to treat and transport the injured. The cause of the derailment is reported to be a depression along the tracks.
The Egyptian government must address the issues plaguing the railway network to ensure the safety of its citizens. Improved maintenance, training, and safety measures are necessary to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
