Train Collision With an Unfortunate Victim: A Girl Met a Tragic End

In the quiet town of Friedland, located in the extreme south of Lower Saxony, near the borders with Hesse and Thuringia, a shocking incident occurred two weeks ago. A 16-year-old girl lost her life at Friedland station.

Initially, the police suspected an accident as the cause of the girl's death. However, further investigations revealed a different story. A 31-year-old man, who had served a substitute prison sentence and had registered again as an asylum seeker in Friedland, is now suspected of intentionally pushing the girl in front of an oncoming freight train on August 11.

The man, who was provisionally released by a court in Hannover in 2025, had a history of mental health issues. It was previously known that he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. On the day of the crime, he exhibited signs of mental disturbance.

The police were called to Friedland station shortly before the incident due to a man causing a disturbance. A voluntary alcohol test showed 1.35 per mille for the suspect. DNA traces of the man were found on the victim's shoulder.

The investigative judge ordered the suspect's detention for manslaughter after the DNA traces were found. The public prosecutor's office in Göttingen announced the suspect's involvement. The suspect exercised his right to remain silent during the confrontation with the charges.

An application for detention for deportation was rejected by the district court of Hanover in July 2025. Deportation to Lithuania was possible from March 2025. The suspect filed an asylum application with the federal police in Brunswick in 2022, which was rejected in December of the same year.

Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) criticized the Dublin procedure, stating that the suspect should not have been in Germany. She called for a thorough investigation into why the suspect was not transferred.

The suspect has now been placed in a psychiatric clinic under a detention order. The tragic incident has left the community of Friedland in shock, and the authorities are working diligently to ensure justice is served.
