Trains running swiftly between Madrid and Galicia have resumed service following a week of interruptions.
Renfe, Spain's national rail operator, announced on Sunday that normal train services have been resumed following a seven-day suspension due to forest fires in the province of Ourense.
The high-speed service connecting Madrid and Galicia was restored at 5:00 PM on Sunday. However, no German cities were connected with the resumed high-speed train service; the AVE train service mentioned operates solely within Spain, connecting Madrid with Galician cities like A Coruña and Vigo.
The days with the most affected passengers were August 14 and 15, with over 10,000 passengers each. To cater to the increased demand for travel, Renfe reinforced other services with origin and destination in Galicia, such as the Madrid - A Coruña, Ourense - Alicante, and Madrid - Vigo lines.
Moreover, Renfe put into operation over 65 buses to provide road transport on the Zamora and Puebla de Sanabria-Ourense stretch and to the final destinations. Adif, the Spanish infrastructure manager, confirmed the good condition of the infrastructure and received confirmation from emergency services before restoring the service.
During the service interruption, over 50,000 passengers were affected, with 101 trains canceled. The stations in Madrid and Galicia affected by the suspension were kept open all night since August 13, and hotel rooms, a total of more than 500 places, have been provided to people with integrated tickets who lost connections with other trains.
In response to the situation, the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, announced that special trains would be arranged to transport those who were unable to travel due to the fires. Food, drinks, and blankets were distributed to passengers who could not travel due to service cuts caused by the fires. Passengers could receive assistance from Renfe and Adif staff during the night.
To accommodate those who had to spend the night at the stations, more than 5,000 passengers were facilitated on August 14 despite the interruption of the train service due to the fires. The nights of August 14 and 15 were the ones with the most passengers using the stations to spend the night.
Álvaro Fernández Heredia, the president of Renfe, announced that no additional action is needed for those with tickets for afternoon trains. The AVE from Madrid to A Coruña at 5:10 PM and from Vigo to Madrid at 5:25 PM were announced for resumption of services.
This news brings relief to thousands of passengers who have been affected by the forest fires in recent days. Renfe and Adif continue to work closely with emergency services to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers during this challenging time.
