Transformed motorhome revolution: substantial driver's license modifications result in wide-ranging implications

The European Union (EU) has announced a significant change to the driving license directive that will impact camping enthusiasts across the continent. This change is part of a comprehensive reform of the EU driving license directive and will allow motorhomes with a permissible total weight of up to 4.25 tons to be driven with a regular class B driver's license.

Until 2028, the current 3.5-tonne limit for class B driver's licenses will continue to apply. However, from September 19, 2026, this weight limit will be increased, opening up a broader range of motorhomes to a larger number of buyers.

Previously, manufacturers often had to compromise to keep their vehicles below the 3.5-tonne limit. The weight increase opens up new design possibilities for motorhome manufacturers, allowing them to plan more flexibly and integrate more comfort, better safety equipment, and the latest technology.

In Germany alone, around 43 million overnight stays were registered on campsites in 2024, indicating a strong demand for motorhomes. Member states may require drivers to complete special training or pass an additional test to ensure safety on the roads.

It is important to note that this change does not affect air passengers' rules at control immediately. The changes to the EU driving license directive were originally decided within the EU, and the new rules are set to officially come into force on September 19, 2026.

Meanwhile, in other news, Öko-Test has measured mercury in tuna and warned against two specific products. And as for holidays in Croatia, a new toll system has a decisive advantage, although further specifics are yet to be revealed with ActivRente decisions for 2026 still in the works.

Stay tuned for more updates on these developments and others in the world of camping and travel.
