"Transforming a Former Nazi Road: Attracting Insects with Garden Snails"

In a picturesque planting event held on Thursday, the Loki-Schmidt Foundation, along with volunteers, took part in a significant initiative to beautify Hamburg's Planten un Blomen park. Forty-eight grass lilies, the flower of the year 2024, were planted on the embankment of the former imperial road, marking the beginning of a transformation that will culminate in a spectacular display of pink blossoms in May 2024.

The Wilhelmsburg Island Park, a key component of the planned green landscape axis in Wilhelmsburg, was the chosen location for this planting. This park, once an area where cars drove, will soon be home to these vibrant grass lilies, serving as a vital food source for insects and creating a captivating spectacle for visitors.

The planting event was a milestone in the ongoing development of Wilhelmsburg. The district, which already includes the Wilhelmsburger Town Hall Quarter, Elbinsel Quarter, and Spreehafen Quarter, is undergoing further development to improve connections within the district.

The old route of the Wilhelmsburg Imperial Road, closed in October 2019, is also part of this transformation. It will be transformed into parks and residential areas, providing a more sustainable and eco-friendly environment for the community.

The blooming grass lilies in the Wilhelmsburg Island Park are just one piece of this larger puzzle. The green landscape axis being planned aims to create a network of green spaces, parks, and waterways that will enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

As the grass lilies bloom with their pink blossoms starting from May, they will not only add a burst of colour to the park but also contribute to the biodiversity of the area, attracting numerous insects. This initiative is a testament to the commitment of the Loki-Schmidt Foundation and the community to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Hamburg.

Stay tuned for more updates as we follow the progress of these beautiful grass lilies and the development of Wilhelmsburg in the coming years.
