Transportation agency PennDOT's ongoing project along Rt. 51 in Jefferson Hills experiences a substantial alteration this week

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to take a winter hiatus after completing the center portion of the Route 51 roadway, with the second year of the reconstruction project set to resume next spring.

John Shumway, a General Assignment Reporter at KDKA, reported that starting from Friday evening, Route 51 through Pleasant Hills and Jefferson Hills will be crossover-free. This means that northbound traffic will no longer be sent into the southbound lanes, and all lanes on Route 51 through Jefferson Hills will be opened, returning traffic patterns to normal.

PennDOT Assistant Executive for Construction Doug Thompson announced that the repaving of the turning lanes on Route 51 will be completed by mid to late October. After the evening rush on Friday, temporary traffic control measures will be set up. Under the new configuration, there will be a single lane for northbound and southbound traffic, with outside lanes for right-hand turns into businesses. Left-hand turns will be possible at traffic signals under this new setup.

In the spring, PennDOT will focus on the stretch of Route 51 from East Bruceton Road to the area near the former Century III Mall. The following year, they will work on the stretch from the former Century III Mall to Lebanon Church Road interchange, using the same single lane and crossover method each year.

It's important to note that the continuation of Route 51 from Ost Bruceton Road to the area near the former Century III Mall will be handled by a different contractor or authority next spring, while John Shumway will continue his work at KDKA.

Thompson also announced that northbound traffic will return to its proper side of the roadway, making travel on Route 51 through the South Hills smoother and more predictable. The Route 51 reconstruction project is expected to be completed by mid to late October.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story, and remember to drive safely during the transition period.
