Travelers astounded by their vehicle on the Italian highway - "The renowned Italian auto"
In a bid to ensure road safety, Italy has tightened its regulations on overloading vehicles. This comes to light following a viral TikTok video that shows a car heavily laden, reminiscent of an oversized Jenga tower, with an Italian license plate, cruising on a highway.
The video, which has garnered over 400,000 likes as of August 27, has sparked a mix of disbelief, mockery, and nostalgia among viewers. Some users speculate why the police didn't intervene, suggesting that the whole of Italy might have recognised the license plate.
Italy's new car fines, aimed at deterring such dangerous practices, can incur penalties of up to 1700 euros. The details of these fines are yet to be specified, but it's clear that the Italian government is taking a firm stance on the issue.
The permissible roof load for a vehicle is not listed in the vehicle registration certificate but can be found in the vehicle's operating manual. Typically, the load ranges between 50 and 100 kilograms, including racks and boxes. Exceeding this limit shifts the center of gravity upwards, making the car more unstable and harder to control.
Moreover, overloading or improperly loading a car significantly impairs driving safety. It increases braking distance, makes handling unstable, and makes the vehicle more susceptible to side wind. It also places greater stress on the rear axle, affecting suspension, tires, and steering.
In Germany, overloading a vehicle can result in a fine of up to 235 euros and one point on your license. In Italy, the regulation on load limits is issued by the Italian government or the relevant Italian regulatory authority responsible for traffic and transportation laws.
It's crucial for those planning to drive abroad, particularly in Italy, to familiarise themselves with the relevant regulations. This includes understanding the load limits, as well as requirements for items such as warning triangles, first aid kits, and reflective vests.
Transporting luggage insecurely or ignoring load limits not only risks fines but also actively endangers road safety. So, before you hit the road, make sure your vehicle is loaded safely and securely.
