Travelers known as Wanderkinos have arrived in Gütersloh for a brief visit.
In September 2025, the city of Gütersloh will be celebrating its anniversary, and a unique part of the festivities will be two evenings of silent films with live music. The travelling cinema, Wanderkino, will be visiting the city as part of a series of activities for the celebrations.
Wanderkino, a mobile cinema that has been on the road since 1999, has toured through numerous countries, including Germany, France, Slovenia, Poland, Lithuania, and many more. In 2023, it was awarded the German Silent Film Prize.
The first Wanderkino screening during the city's anniversary celebrations will take place at Berlin Square on Tuesday, 9th September at 8pm. The programme for this evening includes the classic slapstick comedy "LIBERTY" with Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy from 1929 and Buster Keaton's masterpiece "Sherlock Jr." from 1924.
The second screening will take place at the Evangelical Church in Friedrichsdorf on Wednesday, 10th September at 8pm. The lineup for this evening features Charlie Chaplin's "Easy Street" from 1917, René Clair's "Paris Sleeps" from 1925, and Buster Keaton's "Honeymoon Hotel" from 1920.
Both film evenings will have live musical accompaniment led by Sebastian Pank (saxophone, bass clarinet) and Tobias Rank (piano). This promises to be an unforgettable experience, as the silent films are brought to life by the talented musicians.
The events are being organised by the municipal department of culture for the city's anniversary celebrations. Admission to the Wanderkino events is free, making it an affordable and enjoyable way for everyone to be a part of the festivities.
So, mark your calendars for September 2025 and join the city of Gütersloh in celebrating its anniversary with a touch of silent film magic. The Wanderkino screenings are not to be missed!
