Bremen's Ancient Lime Tree Granted National Heritage Status

Bremen, Germany – The lime tree in Bremen-Vegesack, a centuries-old icon, has been awarded the prestigious title of National Heritage Tree by the German Dendrological Society e.V. (DDG). This recognition comes as the tree is expected to reach an impressive milestone of 1,000 years of age.

Standing tall at 25 meters, the lime tree boasts a trunk circumference of over six meters, making it a monumental sight in the residential area of Vegesack. With its robust health, the tree has weathered numerous changes over the centuries and has become a cherished part of the local community.

The award of National Heritage Tree status includes a thorough examination of the tree's health and safety. Dr. Andreas Roloff, chairman of the National Heritage Woods Committee of the DDG, commented on the tree's exceptional health, stating, "The lime tree in Vegesack is in excellent condition, and we are delighted to add it to our list of National Heritage Trees."

In the event of any damage or injury to the tree, the DDG has pledged to provide assistance. Funding for repairs will be provided by the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation.

The lime tree in Vegesack is the 51st tree to be designated as a National Heritage Tree by the DDG. Previously, a circa 160-year-old giant sequoia on the Riensberg cemetery received this special status in February 2022.

The National Heritage Trees committee aims for as many National Heritage Trees as possible to reach the age of 1,000 years. Dr. Roloff expressed, "We are committed to preserving these ancient trees for future generations to enjoy."

The DDG has designated 50 trees as National Heritage Trees to date, and they continue to search for more trees worthy of this honour. The lime tree in Vegesack, with its rich history and impressive age, is a worthy addition to this esteemed list.
