Trees are being felled on Lohrstrasse
In the heart of Chemnitz, eight maple trees in Lohrstraße, Schlosschemnitz district, have been felled as part of a comprehensive renovation project. The city of Chemnitz, along with participating specialist departments, made the joint decision to replace the trees due to their current location and growing conditions.
Originally, it was planned to preserve the eight maple trees, but they are rooted in a concrete slab within the roadway. Their proximity to the newly designed roadside potentially caused further damage to their roots, making it impossible for them to thrive in the long term.
An external expert's assessment on August 26th found no breeding or nesting sites of birds or other particularly protected species in the affected trees or their immediate surroundings. Similarly, there are no indications of the presence of habitats for protected species such as bats, insects, or other particularly protected animal species.
The search results do not provide specific information about the types and names of the eight new trees that will be planted during the renovation. However, these new plantings will take place together with the plantings in the adjacent section between Blankenauer Straße and Wilhelm-Külz-Platz during the planting period this fall.
The current condition of the tree pits does not provide sufficient growing conditions for the trees, as they are completely sealed at the surface. To address this issue, the tree pits will be redesigned to provide better growing conditions and increase the stability and traffic safety of the trees.
The renovation project also aims to maintain existing parking regulations, including the possibility of diagonal parking. However, after completion of the construction work, longitudinal or diagonal parking would have had to be ordered due to space reasons, resulting in the loss of up to 20 parking spaces.
The necessary permits for the felling of the eight maple trees have been obtained. The new plantings at optimized locations will allow for the maintenance of these parking regulations, ensuring minimal disruption to the local community.
The renovation project is a coordinated construction effort involving the city of Chemnitz, ensuring a seamless transformation of Lohrstraße between Blankenauer Straße and Further Straße.
