Trump declares investigation into the Washington D.C. police force over allegations of inflating crime statistics in the midst of safety assertions

President Donald Trump announced an investigation into the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) for allegedly inflating crime statistics. The investigation, which was announced via a post on Trump's Truth Social platform, comes after a series of controversies surrounding the D.C. police force.

According to reports, the investigation was initiated four days before the official announcement of a federal crackdown on crime in the city. The Executive Order declaring a crime emergency in D.C. resulted in over 400 arrests, including an MS-13 gang member.

The investigation centres around allegations that the MPD has a history of trying to distort crime statistics by downgrading felonies to misdemeanors. Charlotte Djossou, a former MPD Sergeant, sued the District for allegedly misclassifying crimes to reduce crime statistics. Djossou claimed that higher-ups in the MPD told officers to reclassify crimes into something less serious.

The city had no comment on the settlement between Djossou and the District. However, the investigation against the MPD regarding these allegations was not specifically dated, but discussions and controversies surrounding the issue were noted around 2024 and 2025. A public safety emergency was declared by President Trump on August 11, 2025, which involved taking control over the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.

Trump stated that the MPD is under serious investigation for this alleged action. He recently claimed that Washington, D.C. was the most unsafe city in the United States, a title it had also held previously.

7News reached out to the Department of Justice and MPD for comment on the investigation, but neither has responded as of the time of publication. It remains to be seen how this investigation will unfold and what impact it may have on the D.C. police force and the city's crime statistics.
