Renowned automotive mogul and motor sports king, Roger Penske, is set to receive the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom. This announcement was made by President Donald Trump, who described Penske as a "very brilliant guy."

Known by his nickname, "The Captain," Penske has made a significant impact in the world of racing. He holds the record for the most wins in racing history, according to Trump. Penske has triumphed in the Indianapolis 500 an impressive 18 times, and he has also clinched the Daytona race.

Penske's contributions extend beyond the race track. He was instrumental in bringing the 2006 Super Bowl to Detroit and in helping to bring IndyCar racing back to Detroit's Belle Isle. His business acumen is evident in his role as the billionaire owner of Team Penske and the founder of Penske Corp. After his racing career, Penske ran car dealerships and a commercial vehicle leasing company that bears his name.

Previous recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom include golfing legend Tiger Woods, cultural icons Elvis Presley and Babe Ruth, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and retired Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, among others. NASCAR driver Richard Petty received the award in 1992.

Penske expressed his gratitude for the President's acknowledgment of his achievements in a social media statement. He thanked President Trump for the upcoming award, stating, "I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom."

Penske was in Washington in April to celebrate 2018 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Joey Logano's victory at the White House. Last week, he was at the White House with this year's Indianapolis 500 winner, Simon Pagenaud. The most recent award was given to economist Arthur Laffer on Wednesday.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is presented for "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors." It is one of the highest civilian awards in the United States.

As Penske prepares to receive this esteemed honour, he continues to hold his current position as the owner and head of Team Penske, as well as the head of the IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2025. His legacy in racing and business continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
