In a significant development, a New York federal appeals court has confirmed an $83.3 million judgment against former U.S. President Donald Trump for defamation. This follows a 2023 jury verdict that found Trump liable for defaming E. Jean Carroll, a journalist who accused him of sexual assault in the 1990s.

The jury in Manhattan found Trump guilty of defamation in January 2024. The court's decision was based on Trump's continued public insults towards Carroll during the trial. The court set the damages for defamation against Trump at $83.3 million.

This ruling comes after a separate jury had found Trump liable for $5 million in damages for sexually assaulting Carroll in the 1990s and defaming her with later statements. This verdict was unanimously confirmed by a three-judge panel in December 2024.

The appeals court clarified that Trump's attacks on Carroll were private statements, not official acts. This decision was made in light of the Supreme Court's 2023 ruling that presidents enjoy immunity for official acts while in office. However, the court determined that these private statements by Trump were not protected by immunity.

The U.S. appeals court's decision was reported by The New York Times and other media outlets. Trump and his legal team have yet to comment on the new verdict.

E. Jean Carroll filed a civil lawsuit against Trump for defamation in November 2019. She accused Trump of sexual assault in a New York department store in the 1990s, an allegation that Trump has repeatedly denied.

As a result of the court's decision, Donald Trump must continue to pay $83.3 million to author E. Jean Carroll. This marks a significant financial blow for the former president, who has faced numerous legal challenges since leaving office.
