In a recent development, President Donald Trump has proposed deploying the National Guard to New Orleans, Louisiana, to combat rising crime rates in the city. This suggestion comes after Trump's previous mention of sending military forces to Chicago, Illinois, and Baltimore, Maryland, to restore order.

Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C., argues that similar results to the reduction in violent crime could have been achieved with more city police officers in service. Since Trump announced mobilizing federal forces on Aug 7, over 1,760 arrests have been made citywide in Washington, D.C.

However, the deployment of the National Guard to other Democratic-controlled cities around the country would represent an important escalation. Councilmember Jean-Paul Morrell believes it is ridiculous to consider sending the National Guard to New Orleans without a request, and Guardsmen are not trained for law enforcement, according to Morrell.

The City of New Orleans values its federal and state partnerships for ensuring public safety. Governor Jeff Landry, a Democrat, is significant because he supports the deployment of National Guard troops to New Orleans, which Trump referenced as a reason for considering sending National Guard forces to the city.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell was indicted on federal fraud charges last month, which has raised concerns about the city's ability to manage its own security. Trump claims he can "straighten out" crime issues in New Orleans within two weeks.

However, state and local officials, as well as many residents, in Chicago and Baltimore have opposed the idea of National Guard deployment. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore remain opposed to military intervention in their cities.

It is important to note that Washington, D.C. is a federal district where Trump has the power to take over the local police force for up to 30 days. Councilmember Oliver Thomas reported that crime in New Orleans is currently down, but the city's leaders are still considering Trump's proposal.

The President made these comments during a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki. The future of National Guard deployment to Democratic-controlled cities remains uncertain, but the proposal has sparked heated debates and concerns about civil liberties and law enforcement capabilities.
