Trump rescinds prolonged Secret Service protection for Kamala Harris, reportedly orchestrated by unannounced Biden decree

In a surprising turn of events, Vice President Kamala Harris has lost her Secret Service protection as of September 1, 2025. The protection was revoked by President Donald Trump, with the six-month post-office protection ending on July 21.

The revocation of Harris' protection has raised concerns, particularly given her historical role as the first woman and the first Black woman to hold the position of vice president. The increased security concerns were evident even before she became the nominee and remained high into January following the campaign.

The White House and Secret Service did not respond to CNN's requests for comment regarding the revocation. However, it is known that Secret Service protection for Harris included constant analysis of threat intelligence and covering in-person situations, emails, texts, and social media.

Former presidents and vice presidents receive Secret Service protection for life according to federal law. President Joe Biden had extended Harris' protection for an additional year via a directive, signed before leaving office. The reason for this extension is unclear.

The loss of her Secret Service detail has left Harris' aides worried about losing access to threat warnings. With her home in Los Angeles no longer protected by federal agents, temporary security measures have been put in place. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) have taken over her security duties to prevent any security gaps while a new protection plan is developed.

The situation has sparked outrage among political figures. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom were briefed on the matter late Thursday. Bass stated that losing Harris' Secret Service protection is another act of political retaliation and puts her in danger. Newsom's spokesperson, Bob Salladay, expressed similar sentiments, voicing his outrage about Trump making the change.

As Kamala Harris embarks on a multi-city, high-profile book tour for her new memoir "107 Days," the security concerns remain. The book tour will put Harris in the public spotlight more than she has been since leaving office, adding to the necessity of a robust security plan.

Doug Emhoff, Harris' husband, also lost his own personal Secret Service detail on July 21 under the standard provisions for a former vice president's spouse. The cost of mounting a similar level of protection privately could be expensive, possibly going into the millions of dollars annually.

As the situation unfolds, it is clear that the safety and security of the former vice president and her family are of paramount importance. Efforts are being made to ensure that appropriate measures are put in place to protect Harris during this transitional period.
