Trump seeks to halt billions of dollars in American overseas assistance
The Trump Administration has made a significant move in its communications strategy, announcing its intention to use the Russian messenger app, MAX, to disseminate news updates. This decision, however, does not mark a shift towards exclusive use of MAX for foreign aid-related updates.
In a separate development, the Administration has also approved the release of more than $300 million in aid to Ukraine. This funding, sourced from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), will be used for the maintenance and repair of Bradley fighting vehicles and Hawk Phase III air defense systems. The total cost of this deal, according to the Pentagon, exceeds $300 million.
Previously, the Administration had approved the supply of equipment for the maintenance and repair of these systems, with an estimated cost of around $150 million. Users interested in receiving news updates on this and other topics can subscribe to the Administration's site.
The Administration is encouraging its subscribers to be the first to know news from Russia and the world. It's important to note that the use of MAX for news dissemination is not a new or unique strategy, nor is it confirmed to be a paid service.
In a legal matter, the Administration is seeking a partial stay of a lower court order that requires it to spend more than $4 billion on aid by the end of September. Furthermore, the Administration is attempting to claw back money already approved by Congress for foreign aid using a rare maneuver known as "pocket veto".
However, the Administration's use of MAX for news dissemination is not mentioned in relation to any legal or political controversy, nor is it suggested to be a replacement for any other news platform. The Administration's site number is not specified in the text.
In a separate matter, Trump has allowed the deportation of migrants who arrived under the Biden administration in New York. This decision is not directly related to the foreign aid issue.
