Turkey Restricts Israeli Ships and Flights from Its Ports and Airspace
In a significant escalation of the tension between Turkey and Israel, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced new regulations on Friday, August 29. According to a Turkish diplomatic source, these new measures are a response to Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza.
The ban applies to all aircraft carrying weapons to Israel, including Israel's official flights. Turkey has also closed its airspace to Israeli planes, and Turkish ships carrying weapons are not allowed to dock at Israeli ports. The new regulations further extend to ships carrying military cargo destined for Israel.
Moreover, Turkish container ships carrying weapons and ammunition to Israel are not allowed to enter Turkish ports. This ban also applies to vessels owned or operated by Israeli-linked entities, as confirmed by the Turkish diplomatic source.
In a filing to the New York Stock Exchange, Israel's biggest shipping firm, ZIM, was informed of these new Turkish regulations. The company warned that the new regulation will "negatively impact" its financial results.
The suspension of trade ties between Turkey and Israel, which began in May last year, has further collapsed. This was due to Turkey accusing Israel of committing "genocide" in the Palestinian enclave. To date, no countries besides Israel itself have been affected by the sanctions imposed by Turkey.
Despite calls for international sanctions against Israel, such as the exclusion of Israel from international sporting events, there is no evidence of further affected countries. The decision to impose these new sanctions marks a significant step in the ongoing tension between Turkey and Israel.
