The Turkish government has announced a major milestone in its digital transformation, with the launch of a 5G frequency tender scheduled for October 16, 2022. Here's what you need to know about the upcoming tender and the timeline for the rollout of 5G services in Turkey.

The tender, to be held at the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) headquarters, will allocate 11 different frequency packages to mobile operators. A total frequency of 400 MHz, split between the 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz frequency bands, will be made available through the tender.

The minimum value for the tender is set at $2.125 billion, and the application deadline for operators to submit their bids is 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 16, 2025. Operators holding GSM and 4.5G licenses are eligible to participate in the tender, with government-controlled Turkcell and Türk Telekom, as well as Vodafone's Turkish unit, among the potential bidders.

Once the tender is complete, successful operators will be obligated to pay 5% of their annual revenues to the BTK from 2029. The authorization period for operators will be valid until Dec. 31, 2042.

Mobile operators are expected to start providing 5G services in April 2026, with the launch of 5G services in Turkey imminent and availability expected within months. The start date for offering 5G services by mobile operators remains April 1, 2026, as per the minister's previous statement.

After 2029, a new authorization regime for operators' infrastructure and services will be offered under a new tender. This will mark the next phase in Turkey's digital transformation, further enhancing the country's connectivity and paving the way for innovative new services and technologies.

Stay tuned for updates on the 5G tender and the rollout of 5G services in Turkey. The future of the country's digital landscape is looking brighter than ever.
