The electric two-wheeler market in India has shown a consistent pattern over the past few years, with slow sales at the start of the financial year and during the monsoon period, followed by a surge in sales during the festive season. This trend was observed yet again in the first quarter of the current financial year, FY 2026.

In April 2025, the market saw a significant boost as cumulative sales increased by 40% compared to the same month in the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by Bengaluru-based Ather Energy, whose family electric scooter, the Rizta, played a crucial role in the sales surge. Ather Energy sold 13,167 units of electric scooters in April 2025.

However, on a month-on-month basis, sales in April 2025 decreased by 30%. This dip in sales was temporary as the market picked up momentum in the following months, particularly during the festive season.

In the electric two-wheeler market, TVS Motor has been leading the pack. In April 2026, TVS sold 19,736 units, securing a slight edge over its competitors with a 22% share in the market. However, Ola Electric managed to overtake Bajaj Auto and rank second with 19,709 units sold, thanks to discounts offered during "Akshay Tritiya". Ola Electric now holds 21% of the market.

Bajaj Auto, despite slipping down to third position, is not far behind. The company launched a new, more affordable electric two-wheeler model called the Chetak 3503 in March 2025. The launch of this model is expected to help Bajaj Auto catch up on lost grounds in the electric two-wheeler market.

Hero MotoCorp, another major player in the market, holds 7% of the electric two-wheeler market and sold 6,123 units of Vida electric scooters in April 2025.

The electric two-wheeler market in India is expected to get more diverse and exciting as automakers are gearing up to expand their product portfolio. The market crossed 1 million annual sales in FY 2025, and with the growing urban traffic, emission norms, and fuel price increases, the electric motorcycle segment is expected to show the fastest growth.

As we move forward, it will be interesting to see how the market evolves and which brands manage to maintain their positions or rise to the top. The competition is heating up in the electric two-wheeler market, offering consumers a wider range of choices and more innovative products.
