Federal and immigration authorities, including the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Georgia, carried out an enforcement operation at a Hyundai facility in Ellabell, Georgia, on Thursday. The operation, which was in connection with an investigation into unlawful employment practices and other serious federal crimes, took place at a multi-hundred acre construction site where Hyundai and LG Energy Solution are jointly building a new battery plant.

The exact number of people taken into custody during the operation remains unclear. Large buses were also seen entering the site, and hundreds of undercover law enforcement vehicles and Humvees were reportedly present. Agents asked construction to be ceased immediately and were seen lining workers up and searching their bags during the operation. ICE agents asked everyone on the premises whether they were U.S. citizens.

The facility, located about 28 miles west of Savannah, Georgia, employs approximately 1,400 people and is considered one of Georgia's largest and most high-profile manufacturing sites. Hyundai confirmed the presence of law enforcement at the construction site and stated they are cooperating and committed to abiding by all labor and immigration regulations. Mary Beth Kennedy, a spokesperson for HL-GA Battery Co., LG Energy Solution, and Hyundai's joint venture, also confirmed cooperation with the authorities and announced a pause in construction.

Special Agent in Charge Simona M. Escobar led the operation. In a statement, ICE spokesperson stated that the investigation is focused on ensuring accountability for those who violate the law and upholding the rule of law. The investigation is a complex case requiring strong collaboration and extensive investigative efforts, and it is expected to continue beyond Thursday, although no timeline was provided.
