U5 line of Frankfurt's subway system won't finish construction until 2029
The much-anticipated extension of U-Bahn Line U5 in Frankfurt is facing delays, with the expected opening date now pushed back to 2029. The delay is attributed to several factors, including supply shortages, personnel issues, and complications with procurement procedures.
Originally scheduled to open in 2027, the extension project includes the construction of four new stations and a 3-kilometer-long track that will serve the European quarter of Frankfurt. One of the new stations will be located underground at the Goods Place in Gallus.
Since 2023, four procurement procedures for the U-Bahn Line U5 extension project have been cancelled and re-tendered. This cancellation and re-tendering process is believed to be the primary cause of the delay. The city of Frankfurt has selected companies including XYZ GmbH and ABC Construction for the new subway section, but initial contracts awarded in 2023 have been cancelled due to compliance issues and revised project scopes.
Mobility Commissioner Wolfgang Siefert (Greens) expressed his disappointment about the delay, stating that they are working at full speed to find a solution. He acknowledged that the delay is likely to be disappointing for all Frankfurt residents, as the U-Bahn Line U5 extension is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the city.
Despite the delay, the new trains on the extended U-Bahn Line U5 are still expected to run in 2029, offering much-needed relief to the city's growing population and improving its public transportation network.
